What is education? What is the purpose of education? Let’s have a look into the matter. Education is the process by which our mind develops through formal learning at an institution like a school, college, or university. It is mental and intellectual training that provides opportunities for growth and helps meet challenges and overcome obstacles to progress. Again, the purpose of education is to enlighten individuals and to develop their capacity to the limit. It is also the business of education to train individuals to make the right choices to go ahead. And It ennobles our minds and refines our sensibility. It also broadens our outlook and helps us become aware of our rights and responsibilities.
According to Newman, “Education gives a man a clear conscious view of his own opinions and judgments, a truth in developing them, and eloquence in expressing them and a force in using them. Therefore, it is often compared to light which removes the darkness of ignorance and helps us distinguish between right and wrong. Ex-president Julius Nyere of Tanzania way back in 1974 said at an international conference that the primary purpose of education was the liberation of man from the restrictions of habits and attitudes which limit his humanity. He further said that education should promote humanity and universal brotherhood and that it could be used as a catalyst for a change for the better. How right he was! What do you think? Isn’t it right even today?
বঙ্গানুবাদ : শিক্ষা কি? শিক্ষার উদ্দেশ্য কি? চলুন ব্যাপারটা দেখে নেওয়া যাক। শিক্ষা হলো এমন একটি প্রক্রিয়া যার মাধ্যমে স্কুল, কলেজ বা —বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের মতো একটি প্রতিষ্ঠানে আনুষ্ঠানিক শিক্ষার মাধ্যমে মানসিক বিকাশ ঘটে। এটি মানসিক এবং বুদ্ধিবৃত্তিক প্রশিক্ষণ যা বৃদ্ধির সুযোগ প্রদান
করে এবং চ্যালেঞ্জ মোকাবিলা করতে এবং অগ্রগতির পথে বাধা অতিক্রম করতে সহায়তা করে। আবার শিক্ষার উদ্দেশ্য হলো ব্যক্তিকে আলোকিত করা এবং তাদের সামর্থকে সীমাবদ্ধ করা। এগিয়ে যাওয়ার জন্য সঠিক পছন্দ করার জন্য ব্যক্তিদের প্রশিক্ষণ দেওয়াও শিক্ষার ব্যবসা। এটি আমাদের মনকে উজ্জীবিত করে এবং আমদের সংবেদনশীলতাকে পরিমার্জিত করে। এটি আমাদের দৃষ্টিভঙ্গি প্রসারিত করে এবং আমাদের অধিকার ও দায়িত্ব সম্পর্কে সচেতন হতে সাহায্য করে। নিউম্যানের মতে, “শিক্ষা একজন মানুষকে তার নিজস্ব মতামত এবং রায় সম্পর্কে একটি স্পষ্ট সচেতন দৃষ্টিভঙ্গি দেয়, সেগুলো বিকাশে একটি সত্য এবং সেগুলোকে প্রকাশ করার ক্ষেত্রে বাগ্মীতা এবং সেগুলো ব্যবহার করার জন্য একটি শক্তি দেয়। এ
অতএব, এটি প্রায়শই আলোর সাথে তুলনা করা হয় যা অজ্ঞতার অন্ধকার দূর করে এবং আমাদের সঠিক এবং ভুলের মধ্যে পার্থক্য করতে সহায়তা করে। ১৯৭৪ সালে তানজানিয়ার প্রাক্তন রাষ্ট্রপতি জুলিয়াস নাইরে একটি আন্তর্জাতিক সম্মেলনে বলেছিলেন যে শিক্ষার প্রাথমিক উদ্দেশ্য ছিল মানুষের 21 অভ্যাস এবং মনোভাবের সীমাবদ্ধতা থেকে মুক্তি যা তার মানবতাকে সীমাবদ্ধ করে। তিনি আরও বলেন, শিক্ষার উচিত মানবতা ও সার্বজনীন ভ্রাতৃত্বকে উন্নীত করা এবং এটিকে উন্নতির জন্য পরিবর্তনের অনুঘটক হিসেবে ব্যবহার করা যেতে পারে। তিনি কতটা সঠিক ছিলেন! আপনি কি মনে করেন? আজও কি ঠিক হচ্ছে না?
